PEI DRUNK DRIVING STATISTICS
The statistics is Prince Edward Island for drunk driving are alarming. One of the good things is that there are not that many road accidents in the province, in 2003 they recorded only 17 deaths on the roads. That is not a lot compared to some other provinces, but the percent of those deaths that were related in some way and those that were directly because of drunk driving are a big problem.
Over 80 percent of all traffic fatalities had something to do with alcohol one way or another, and there were a fantastic rate of deaths in car crashes, over 64 percent of them had as a direct cause alcohol abuse. Although the amounts are not as substantial as other places in Canada, drunk driving plays a huge part in traffic accidents and also causes people to lose their lives.
ALCOHOL AND STUDENTS
Alcohol is still the predominant substance used by students in schools. In Prince Edward Island, in a study conducted in the year 2003, more than half of the students admitted to having consumed alcohol in the year that had passed. There are a lot more students in PEI in 12th grade compared to the numbers of students in 7th grade. In fact, in Grade 7, there was a rate of 8 percent and in Grade 12; there were over 77 percent of the students who admitted to having consumed alcohol.
The reports say that when people take drugs and such illicit substances, they often mix it with alcohol. It seems that a lot of drugs are mixed with alcohol, as it seems to be substance of choice where mixing is concerned. Various types of consequences can come from abusing alcohol at this young age. Such incidents include injuries, public disturbance and unplanned sex.
The overall state of Prince Edward Island with regards to alcohol is not so bad compared to other provinces. The overall rate of alcohol abuse reported in PEI is a little over 10 percent of the population, which isn’t that bad, but could be better.
