Since the beginning of the 1990’s, alcohol trends amongst adolescents have started increasing, that is true of alcohol and other illicit drugs such as marijuana. There was an increase in the alcohol consumption rate with students as young as 12 or fifteen years old. In the last few years, it has however stabilized. On average, the age at which people start to drink alcohol is 13 years old. In a survey conducted in 2002, it showed that more than 51 percent of the students surveyed admitted to drinking alcohol in the past month.

There were 76 deaths on the roads in the year of 2003 in Nova Scotia that had alcohol as a factor. There were only 77 deaths in Nova Scotia, so there is an almost 99 percent rate of road fatalities that had alcohol related to it. But there were 34 incidents which had alcohol as a direct factor. That’s a rate of 45 percent, which is a big problem for Nova Scotia authorities. It always depends on how much was drunk and who drunk the alcohol, those two things tell the authorities if alcohol was a direct factor in the car crash.

There were 153 people who were injured in car crashes in 2003. And almost half of it was alcohol related injuries and car crashes. Nova Scotia authorities have their hands full with dunk driving as most of the accidents are related to alcohol in some way.

Alcohol abuse in Nova Scotia

Substance abuse, which includes drug abuse and alcohol abuse, is a big factor in Nova Scotia. The rate of substance abuse in Nova Scotia is one of the highest of all provinces with a 14 percent substance abuse rate. It is the highest rate of substance abuse equal with Saskatchewan. Nova Scotia law officials are trying really hard to curb this trend.
