The Interlock Device Program in Prince Edward Island

Prince Edward Island faired pretty well in the report because of several good points found in their Ignition Interlock Program. They were ranked in third place with a grade of C+.

All the important technical components of the interlock device are included in the program in Prince Edward Island. There are certain things that are missing that would make the device perfect, such as a log of the event on the device or some sort of a breath signature to keep the device from being overridden. But all and all, the devices used in PEI are efficient; they won’t let the car start if the BAC registered is of a higher percent than .02.

But the way the program is run has some lacks in it. In no way is it mandatory for an offender to follow the interlock ignition program, even if they are repeat offenders. Also the Prince Edward Island authorities are not legally allowed to keep the interlock device on a car for more than the minimum length of time, so sometimes the program has not achieved the results expected.

Although the police can stop anybody on the road and check their papers, they don’t impound or immobilize vehicles as well or as long as MADD would consider optimal. The MADD standard were not met and so some points were not met.
