For many people the dangers of cocaine are not real until they fall deeper into addiction of the drug. Cocaine is used in an increasingly widespread demographic of people in their young teenage years to people well into their 60's. What used to be a drug that was used in secret is now something that has become popular among people of all walks of life.

Cocaine is a drug that is formed from the cocoa plant. In the late 1800's the drug was isolated from these leaves and the white powdery substance was formed for a stimulating drug. For years it was used, but not with the level of prominence that it is today. What was once a high level drug, used only after other drugs have been experimented with, is not an entry level drug that is easily obtained in cities and rural areas alike?

The dangers of cocaine follow a path of addiction and health problems. Addiction is one of the main concerns as the user will fall deeper and deeper into a place where they cannot function properly in society any longer. As the cocaine restricts the flow of the chemical dopamine from the synapses in the brain, the user has euphoria like feeling. After prolonged use of the drug, a tolerance for the drug is built up and users have to have more of it.

A cocaine addict will crave the drug because of the way that it makes them feel. This feeling is addictive because the brain is flooded with the dopamine chemicals which then “fool" the brain into needing to have more. Feelings of euphoria, strength, confidence, and high levels of being alert are all a part of what cocaine does. There is also an appetite suppressant that people who are obsessed about their weight find very appealing. After a certain period of time the body needs to have these feelings and will go into withdrawals. This will include shakes, pain, headaches, paranoia, sweats, depression, heart problems, and even death in extreme cases.

While addiction is a real danger, there is another threat to people who abuse cocaine. To overcompensate for the effects of the tolerance, and to get more drugs quickly, overdosing can happen very easily. Many deaths that occur from cocaine use are from overdosing, and/or mixing with other drugs and alcohol. Once a user has become dependent on the drug they lose their sense of responsibility and self preservation. They do not know how much to use at a time and lose the ability to stop. They often need to gt in a good cocaine treatment program in Canada to cure their addiction.
