Benzodiazepine Withdrawal

This particular drug can be very physically and mentally addictive for the user.  Long term use will lead to dependence, and can cause a wide variety of health problems for the user.  These long term users typically are taking high doses of the drug, and this will cause more severe withdrawal symptoms.

If a user decides to immediately stop the use of benzodiazepine, they will experience some severe health problems, which could possibly be life threatening to the user.  Typically for effective withdrawal management, a properly designed wean down program should be used.

A user will experience the withdrawal symptoms within 24 to 48 hours after stopping use, and these symptoms, if not handled properly, can last for 4 weeks to 6 months.  This is what makes this drug so dangerous to long term and heavy users.

The withdrawal symptoms can include the following:

  • Anxiety
  • Irritability
  • Sweating
  • Tremors
  • Sleep disorders
  • Depersonalization
  • Derealization
  • Hypersensitivity
  • Depression
  • Suicidal behaviors
  • Psychosis
  • Seizures
  • Delirium tremors

There are many factors that determine the severity of the withdrawal.  Typically it is the physical dependence of the user, the dose at which they are talking, and the length of use.  This will all determine what type of symptoms they will experience, and for how long it will last.  A proper medical detox and drug rehab program is the best solution to handle the problem.
